Tesla Motors Inc. plans to reveal its new, larger, and more powerful Model 3 sedan in 2019, according to people familiar with the matter.
The automaker’s new vehicle will be powered by a new version of its battery pack, the lithium-ion battery, and will offer a host of improvements over the previous generation, including a smaller footprint and a shorter range, these people said.
The company will unveil the new Model 3, which will be made by a unit of China’s Foxconn Technology Group, at the Paris auto show in late March or early April, one of the people said, asking not to be identified because the matter is private.
Tesla did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The announcement comes as Tesla has been aggressively expanding its offerings for the new model, which could see it offer more than 20 new models this year, as well as a smaller lineup with some smaller trim models.
The Model 3 will also be built in China, making it one of several cars produced at the company’s Gigafactory in Sparks, Nevada.
Tesla, a privately held company, is one of two major automakers in the U.S. that is building the Model 3 electric vehicle.
Other automakers, including Ford Motor Co., have also invested in the project.
The Model 3 is being built at Tesla’s Gigaplex plant, which was built in Nevada.
The company’s first two models, the Model S and Model X, were made in China.
